The Council of Alberta University Students is excited to start 2014 by welcoming the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) as a member. SAMRU represents over 10,000 full- and part-time undergraduate students at Mount Royal University in Calgary. CAUS looks forward to Sadiq Valliani, SAMRU President, and Missy Chareka, SAMRU Vice President External, joining our current council members in advocating for an affordable, accessible, and high quality post-secondary education for all students in Alberta.
As 2013 drew to a close, the Honourable Dave Hancock was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of the newly re-named Innovation and Advanced Education (formerly Enterprise and Advanced Education). The year also ended with an injection of $50 million in operational funding back into the post-secondary sector, the University of Alberta Board of Governors approving a 5% increase to international student tuition and the possible opening of the Post-Secondary Learning Act for amendments being “up in the air.” These and many other factors set the stage for 2014 to be an incredibly important year for post-secondary advocacy in Alberta. CAUS is excited to include our new members in discussing student issues with MLAs and PSE stakeholders across the province.
